The millennial women of POPxo

Saloni Bansal

Since the last two decades there has been a rise in the numbers of young women bitten by the entrepreneurial bug who want to make a difference to the world. While most creators nowadays focus on quantity rather than quality, there are a few who still believe that content is the king. The world is full of powerful women who refuse to submit and accept defeat. One such pioneer is Priyanka Gill, founder and CEO of POPxo, who is on a mission to create quality content which speaks to women instead of looking down upon them. An entrepreneur, journalist and angel investor currently based in London, Priyanka’s vision is creating quality content for the female fraternity.

Gill majored in English from Lady Shree Ram College and did her masters from King’s College, London. In 2012, she started a fashion blog called eStylista. In 2013, this went on to become a content platform by the same name. A year later, the platform was renamed to POPxo. In November 2014, Gill raised ₹3 crore for POPxo in pre-series, a funding led by Rajan Anandan and Mithun Sacheti. The company raised an additional $2 million in Series A funding round from IDG Ventures, Kalaari Capital, and 500 other startups. Finally, in 2017, POPxo raised $3.1 million and $5.5 million in a round of funding led by South Korea's Neoplux and Chinese mobile company OPPO with participation from existing investors.

Priyanka Gill has been the biggest cheerleader of digital content. When she started her entrepreneurial journey, her vision was well defined: A go-to place for all things lifestyle, fashion and beauty that resonates with the Indian millennial women. That is how POPxo was born in 2014 and eventually merged with MyGlamm in 2020 for providing a platform for influencers, luxury content and, of course, commerce with its private label. She currently serves as the President and Co-Founder of MyGlamm. In 2019, Priyanka’s name featured on the Business World’s 40 under 40 lists.

From a blog catering to the Indian diaspora in 2013, Priyanka Gill has steered POPxo to be a household name, and branded it as "the desi girl’s guide to life and love.” Today, her website boasts over 50 million unique users per month and is backed by likes of IDG ventures, Kalaari Capital and GREEN Ventures. Added to that, POPxo’s YouTube channel has amassed 2.6 million subscribers!

Gill is also a frequent contributor to top publications such as The Guardian, Vogue India and Hello Pakistan and is also an editor at Harper’s Bazaar India. She is among the finest female entrepreneurs in the current scenario and has earned herself a place in the e-commerce industry.
